What is PrEP?
- HIV-PrEP is a medicinal, prophylactic protective measure against infection with the HI virus (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
- PrEP is not a condom replacement but an additional protective measure
- PrEP only protects against HIV infection and offers no protection against other
sexually transmitted diseases (e.g. hepatitis, chlamydia, gonococci, syphilis, etc.)
Who is PrEP intended for?
- PrEP is intended for people aged 16 and over who are at increased risk of HIV infection. This includes, for example,
- Men who have sex with men who have or are likely to have anal sex without a condom
- Partners of people with HIV who are not taking HIV therapy, for whom HIV therapy is not working properly or for whom HIV therapy has not been working for at least six months
- People who have sex without a condom with partners who are likely to have an undiagnosed HIV infection
- People who inject drugs and do not use sterile syringes
And also other individual PrEP indications (only examples given here)
Further important information:
- Dosage: 1 tablet once daily (tenofovir/emtrizitabine); take for 4 days after starting PrEP until complete protection is achieved; a missed dose can be taken up to 12 hours later
hepatitis therapy
HEPATITIS is an inflammation of the liver, which is often chronic and can lead to a deterioration in liver function. Most forms of hepatitis are caused by viruses. The most common are
-Hepatitis A: is usually transmitted through food and drink in countries with poor hygiene standards. It almost always heals spontaneously and can be reliably prevented by vaccination.
-Hepatitis B: is transmitted through sexual intercourse and blood, is often chronic and can also be reliably prevented by vaccination. A medical cure has only been achieved in exceptional cases. However, there are long-term medications that prevent the disease from progressing.
-Hepatitis C: is also transmitted through blood and sexual intercourse and often becomes a chronic, progressive disease. A permanent cure from the hepatitis C virus can be achieved in almost 100% of cases with 8 to 12 weeks of treatment with excellently tolerated medications.
