Dear patients!
Here is some information about HIV PrEP
If you are interested, please book an online appointment (“HIV PrEP appointment”) or arrange an appointment by phone/in person.
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) at PraxisPlus:
What is PrEP?
– HIV PrEP is a medicinal, prophylactic protective measure against infection with the HIV virus (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
– PrEP is not a condom replacement but an additional protective measure
– PrEP only protects against HIV infection and does not offer protection against other sexually transmitted diseases (e.g. hepatitis, chlamydia, gonococci, syphilis, etc.)
Who is PrEP intended for?
– PrEP is intended for people aged 16 and over who are at increased risk of HIV infection. This includes, for example:
– Men who have sex with men who have or are likely to have anal sex without a condom
– Partners of people with an HIV infection who are not taking HIV therapy, for whom HIV therapy is not working properly, or for whom HIV therapy has not been working for at least six months
– People who have sex without a condom with partners who are likely to have an undiagnosed HIV infection
– People who inject drugs and do not use sterile syringes
– Also other individual PrEP indications (only examples given here)
The process in our practice:
– Before starting PrEP: Medical consultation with Dr. Albers, information session, blood test (HIV test, kidney values, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, possibly also swab/urine for chlamydia/gonococci), prescription for 30 tablets, as soon as the blood results are available and OK, PrEP can be started
– 1st check 4 weeks after starting PrEP: doctor’s consultation, blood test (HIV test, kidney values), prescription for 3 months
– Then every 3 months PrEP check: (blood test (HIV test, kidney values, syphilis, possibly swab/urine), new prescription for 3 months
– Please book the online appointment (“HIV PrEP appointment”) for all PrEP appointments or arrange an appointment in person or by phone
Other important information:
– Take: 1 tablet once daily (tenofovir/emtrizitabine); take for 4 days after starting PrEP until complete protection is achieved; one A missed dose can be taken up to 12 hours later
